Our Mission

The Center for Gender Equitable AI is a 501(c)(3) youth-led organization addressing the gendered harms emerging from artificial intelligence and other technologies. Founded in 2022, we combine research, advocacy, and education to tackle the structural inequities that shape how AI is built and governed.

AI systems don’t exist in a vacuum. They mirror and amplify the inequalities of the societies that create them. Our work spans diverse issues, from confronting tech-facilitated gender-based violence to advancing the representation of women and girls in AI leadership.

Issues We're Tackling

99%

of the victims of nonconsensual explicit deepfakes are women and girls.

15%

— that's how much less likely girls in the U.S. are to be exposed to Computer Science topics than their male peers in school.

12%

of AI researchers globally are women.

Rethinking Unequal Systems

In programming, ! = means "not equal." For us, it captures the deeper truth that inequalities are not just reflected in today's technology, but built into it.

We believe that representation is a root-cause solution to misaligned AI: when women and girls are represented in AI decision-making, we can build in gender equity from the start.

We work to empower women and girls into AI spaces, address current gendered harms, and ensure that gender equity is centered as a core principle of the AI safety movement.

Our Advocacy

In 2024, CGEAI launched #StopExplicitDeepfakes, a youth-led campaign confronting one of AI's most difficult harms that disproportionately impacts women and girls: the spread of non-consensual explicit deepfakes. According to Thorn, 1 in 10 teenagers know someone who has been targeted by an explicit deepfake.

Our goal was simple: to destigmatize the issue, raise awareness, and call for protection for victims. Through social media, storytelling, advocacy, and community education, we mobilized young people to speak out about this critical issue, with our campaign garnering over 43,000 views on social media.
