Our Impact

Since our founding in 2022, the CGEAI has grown from a small student initiative into a global youth-led movement driving change at the intersection of gender equity and emerging technology.

We’ve combined research, advocacy, and education to tackle the structural inequities shaping how artificial intelligence is built and governed, from tech-facilitated gender-based violence to representation in AI leadership.

1. Confronting AI-Driven Online Harassment

​

We’ve led national awareness and policy advocacy to combat explicit deepfakes and online harassment.

Flagship Initiative: #StopExplicitDeepfakes Campaign

  • Reached 25,000+ viewers through social media content destigmatizing deepfake harms.

  • Engaged 40+ volunteers in content creation, research, and outreach.

  • Published an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle calling for stronger legal recourse for victims.

  • Partnered with Design It For Us to co-create youth-facing digital safety materials.

  • Submitted advisory input to the United Nations on tech-facilitated gender-based violence.

  • Met with the Office of Senator Andy Kim to advocate for the TAKE IT DOWN Act.

  • Hosted a national virtual event with activist Dr. Kay Coghill on gendered harms in AI.

2. Elevating Youth Leadership in Responsible Tech

We’re proving that young people aren’t just future leaders: we have the capacity to contribute to responsible tech now.

  • Built a Slack-based coalition of 170+ youth advocates across the globe.

  • Launched 20+ local chapters in New Jersey, California, North Carolina, and more, at schools including Purdue University, Seton Hall University, and the University of Maryland.

  • Hosted 15+ student-led workshops, roundtables, and discussions on digital well-being, AI ethics, and equity in technology, including a virtual workshop with Dr. Thomas Grist of the University of Washington at Madison on algorithmic bias in healthcare.

3. Research & Thought Leadership

We publish accessible, community-informed research on gendered harms in AI, turning data and experience into frameworks for change.

​

Key Research Contributions:

  • Published an op-ed on AI-driven online harassment to the San Francisco Chronicle.

  • Authored 10+ white papers explaining and summarizing select AI policies, including the Algorithmic Accountability Act and the DEFIANCE Act.

4. Education & Capacity Building​​

We’ve equipped schools and communities with tools to understand and respond to emerging tech harms.

  • Spoke at the DOSE Digital Online Safety Summit.

  • Spoke at an AI for middle-schoolers summer camp organized by Encode and Civics Unplugged.

  • Spoke at a mentorship event organized by Women in STEM (WiSTEM).

  • Appeared on the "AI Alignment 101" podcast to speak about AI-driven online harassment issues.

  • Created a 20+ page paper on the issue of explicit deepfakes and creating recommended school policy frameworks.

  • Published 8+ webinars to YouTube (3 hours of content total) on AI policy topics.​

  • Held a "What Are AI Images?" workshop for 30+ elementary schoolers in New Jersey.​

5. Policy & Institutional Impact​​

Our youth leaders have informed national and global policy efforts to make AI governance more equitable.

  • Advised the U.S. Department of Education’s 2024 Digital Wellbeing Challenge, shaping a national initiative to support responsible tech in schools.

  • Submitted advisory input to the United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

  • Invited to attend the United Nations Digital Public Infrastructure Safeguard Framework overview session.

  • Met with members of Congress to discuss AI accountability and youth safety online.

  • Partnered with Girls 4 Sports on the #SignforNine campaign, which pushed for Title IX implementation across U.S. schools.
