Elaine Gombos

Head of Education
Elaine Gombos (she/her) serves as the Head of Education for the Center for Gender Equitable AI. She is currently a third-year student and Charpie Leadership Institute scholar studying computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, with an additional major in artificial intelligence and minors in business administration and drama. Growing up in China before moving to Pittsburgh, PA, she is passionate about technology, advocacy, education, and the performing arts.

Elaine’s interests in technology stem from witnessing its power in providing accessible learning opportunities. She has been involved in virtual international exchanges since 2020, having been named a US Youth Ambassador and serving in leadership roles at many non-profits. Elaine can be seen on GMA, MSNBC, local news, an Aerie Foundation advertisement, and in a foreword of a paper published at the World Innovation Summit for Education.

Elaine’s interest in education transformed from volunteer tutoring for 6+ hours per week, authoring curricula, and becoming a teaching assistant for CMU computer science classes (discrete math, imperative programming, and computer systems), to interning at Duolingo.

Studying computing ethics in college, Elaine has become increasingly alarmed by the lack of regulation and supervision of AI development, as well as the hole in AI ethics education for engineers. From filtering and recommendation algorithms causing teen mental health issues to AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation targeting individuals and invoking polarization, she believes that human supervision is key. Thus, with CGEAI, she works toward ensuring that the next generation is educated, equipped, and prepared to address AI’s harms.

Elaine’s leadership has been recognized by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the Elks National Foundation, Navisite’s Next STEMinists, Women at Microsoft, among many others.
